Narmada – A Valley Rises

Der Film doku­men­tiert den Höhepunkt einer ökolo­gi­schen Wider­stands­be­we­gung, die die Weltbank zwang, ihre Gelder zurück­zu­ziehen, und die inter­na­tio­nale Entwick­lungs­po­litik änderte. Zwei der führenden Köpfe der Bewegung sind die 39-jährige Medha Patkar und Baba Amte, die in Indien durch ihr mutiges Enga­ge­ment für soziale Gerech­tig­keit bekannt ist. Ange­sichts wach­sender Repres­sion und ernsten Menschen­rechts­ver­let­zungen hat die Narmada-Bewegung die Aufmerk­sam­keit der indischen Regierung erzwungen.

Narmada – A Valley Rises chro­ni­cles a turning point in a grass­roots oppo­si­tion movement which in an unpre­ce­dented victory has forced the World Bank to withdraw it’s funding and changed inter­na­tional deve­lop­ment policies. Two of the movement’s leaders are Medha Patkar a remar­kable 39-year old woman and Baba Amte, one of India’s most respected social activists. In the face of increa­sing repres­sion and serious human-rights abuses, the Save Narmada Movement has compelled the Govern­ment of India to take notice. A dramatic and intimate portrait of a unique movement, the film raises critical and universal issues of human rights and social justice within a democracy. All within the framework of a compel­ling and timeless story.
