»Fast jeder hat schon vom einstigen US Nummer 1 Hit The Lion Sleeps Tonight gehört. Was die meisten aber nicht wissen ist, daß das Lied schon 1939 in Zulu in Südafrika entstanden ist. Mbube – Die Nacht des Löwen bietet einen Einblick in eine Musik­rich­tung – die Isica­tha­miya – die erst 1986 durch Ladysmith Black Mambazo und ihrem Beitrag auf Paul Simons Graceland-Album inter­na­tional berühmt wurde. Die Musik entstand aus den Gesangs­wett­be­werben der Zulu-Fabrik­ar­beiter in den großen Städten Südafrikas. Heute noch treffen sie sich jede Sams­tag­nacht, um gegen­ein­ander anzu­treten. Diese Wett­be­werbe dauern die ganze Nacht, und die Lieder, die gesungen werden, sind eine Mischung aus tradi­tio­neller Zulu Hoch­zeits­musik vom Land und den Einflüssen der Städte. Diese Musik­rich­tung hat die Apart­heids­zeit überlebt und ist immer noch sehr beliebt in Südafrika.

Just about everybody you speak to knows the old US hit The Lion Sleeps Tonight. In fact countless musicians have since sung their version of it. But, what hardly anybody knows is that it is based on a 1930s Zulu folk song. Mbube: The Night of the Lion takes a look at the tradition of Isica­tha­miya Music in South Africa – the most famous repre­sen­ta­tive of which is the group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, which reached inter­na­tional stardom after their parti­ci­pa­tion on Paul Simon’s Graceland Album in 1986. Every Saturday night since the early part of this century Zulu factory workers in South Africa’s bigger cities have got together to hold a cappella choir compe­ti­tion. These compe­ti­tions go on all night and the songs that are sung are a mixture of old Zulu tradi­tional music and the modern influ­ences of the city. Isica­tha­miya is a tradition that has survived Apartheid and is still going strong in South Africa today.

Stefanie Sycholt

Geboren 1963 in Pretoria, Südafrika. Während ihres Studiums der Poli­ti­schen Wissen­schaft, Anglistik und Film­theorie an den Univer­sitäten Natal und Kapstadt war sie in der Anti-Apartheid-Studen­ten­be­we­gung tätig und arbeitete dann als Media Officer der ehema­ligen National Union of South African Students. Sie war Doku­men­ta­ristin und Koor­di­na­torin bei einer Anti-Apartheid-Video­gruppe in Durban, bevor sie 1990 nach München kam, um an der Hoch­schule für Fernsehen und Film zu studieren.
