»Tristán Bauer, der sich in den 90er Jahren immer stärker lite­ra­ri­schen Themen zugewandt hat, nutzte den 100. Geburtstag von Jorge Luis Borges, um den viel­fäl­tigen Kosmos dieses Welt­geistes filmisch zu erschließen. Dabei unter­nimmt er eine schwie­rige Grat­wan­de­rung zwischen fiktiver Rekon­struk­tion und Doku­men­ta­tion. Es gelingt ihm, mit seltenem Archiv­ma­te­rial das Leben eines der größten latein­ame­ri­ka­ni­schen Schrift­steller zu beleuchten, der gerade in dem Moment erblin­dete, als er zum Direktor der Natio­nal­bi­blio­thek ernannt wurde, man ihm „die Bücher und die Nacht zu leben gab“. In zahl­rei­chen filmi­schen Zeug­nissen und lite­ra­ri­schen Zitaten belegt er das reiche poetische und erzäh­le­ri­sche Schaffen des Autors und die ihm zugrunde liegende Philo­so­phie. Aber er wagt sich auch daran, einzelne Lebens­si­tua­tionen und Metaphern von Borges’ Werk zu fiktio­na­li­sieren, und findet dabei mitunter atem­be­rau­bende Bilder, z.B. für das Labyrinth der Biblio­thek, das zentrale Synonym für Borges’ eigene Existenz und das Universum schlechthin. In LOS LIBROS Y LA NOCHE hat Tristán Bauer eine konge­niale filmische Umsetzung für den faszi­nie­renden lite­ra­ri­schen Kosmos dieser eindrucks­vollen Gestalt der Welt­li­te­ratur geschaffen.

Tristán Bauer, who increa­singly dedicated himself to literary themes in the nineties, chose the occasion of the one-hundredth anni­versary of Jorge Luis Borges’ birth to explore in film the multi­fa­ceted cosmos of this ›world spirit‹. In so doing, he has chosen a fine line between ficti­tious recon­struc­tion and docu­men­ta­tion. Through the use of rare archive material, Bauer has succeeded in casting light on the life of one of Latin America’s greatest writers, a man who went blind just when he was appointed director of the National Library, when he was given ›the books and the nights to live‹. Numerous cinematic state­ments and literary quotes attest to Borges’ rich poetic and story­tel­ling skill and its under­lying philo­sophy. Bauer has also taken the brave step of fictio­na­li­sing indi­vi­dual moments in Borges’ life and metaphors from his work, thereby producing some brea­thta­king images of, for example, the laby­rin­thine library, the central synonym of Borges’ own existence and the universe per se. Tristán Bauer’s THE BOOKS AND THE NIGHT is a sympa­thetic cinematic portrayal of the fasci­na­ting cosmos of this great and impres­sive writer.
