Lesbos

Die Insel Lesbos am östlichen Rand der Ägäis hat der Frau­en­liebe ihren Namen gegeben. Sappho, von Platon zur Muse erkoren, verhalf ihr mit ihren eroti­schen Gedichten zu Weltruhm. Bis heute pilgern Frauen aus aller Welt zu Sapphos Geburtsort Eressos. Dennoch ist die rätsel­hafte antike Dichterin die bekann­teste Unbe­kannte der Welt­li­te­ratur geblieben. Ähnlich ergeht es ihrer Heimat­insel. Sie ist die große Unbe­kannte der Ägäis: Eine Welt voll stiller Schönheit, die sich den schnellen Blicken der Touristen selten erschließt.
In ihrer Blütezeit stand die reiche Oliven­insel im Zentrum der Macht und war ein bedeu­tender Handels­kno­ten­punkt zwischen Konstan­ti­nopel, Klein­asien und Ägypten. Die heutige Randlage zur Türkei jedoch drängte die dritt­größte Insel Grie­chen­lands ins Abseits. Geblieben ist der Stolz der Insel­be­wohner – und die Sehnsucht nach besseren Zeiten.

The island of Lesbos on the eastern edge of the Aegean sea gave its name to female love. Sappho, decreed muse by Plato, spread its fame far and wide with her erotic poems. Unto this day women from around the globe flock to Sappho’s birth­place, Eressos. Still this mira­cu­lous ancient home, Lesbos. It is the unknown land of the Aegean: A world of silent beauty, that seldomly reveals itself to the hasty eyes of tourists. During its more glorious days, the rich island of olives was a centre of political power and a pivotal point of trade where Constan­ti­nople, Asia Minor and Egypt met. Mostly its proximity to today’s Turkey has pushed Greece’s third large island from the centre-stage. Remaining are the pride of its inha­bi­tants and their hope for better times to come.

Geboren 1960 in Oberst­dorf im Allgäu. Studium der Germa­nistik, Lingu­istik und Philo­so­phie in München. Jour­na­lis­ti­sche und filmische Akti­vitäten seit Mitte der 80er Jahre. 1990-97 Redak­teurin der Süddeut­schen Zeitung. Seitdem freie Autorin der SZ und Doku­men­tar­fil­merin. Mitarbeit bei Wallers letzter Gang und Trans­at­lantis von Christian Wagner. Mehrfach Jurorin u.a. Adolf-Grimme-Preis, Duis­burger Filmwoche und Inter­na­tio­nales Doku­men­tar­film­fes­tival München.
