Lesser Humans

Fünfzig Jahre Unab­hän­gig­keit, Demo­kratie und Fort­schritt konnten das Leben eines beson­deren Teils der indischen Bevöl­ke­rung, der soge­nannten »Bhangi« im Bundes­staat Gujarat, nicht verändern: Bis zum heutigen Tag müssen sie die Arbeit ausführen, die ihnen nach dem Kasten­system auferlegt ist: die eigen­hän­dige Entsor­gung mensch­li­cher Exkre­mente. Der Film unter­sucht Kaste, Geschlecht, wirt­schaft­liche, bildungs- und sozi­al­po­li­ti­sche Faktoren, die diese unmensch­li­chen Praktiken immer noch weiter zulassen.

Fifty years of inde­pen­dence, democracy and progress has not changed the lives of one parti­cular section of Indian people, called the »Bhangi« in Gujarat, who, even today continue the profes­sion prescribed to them by the caste system. The profes­sion of manual disposal of human excreta! This film inves­ti­gates the caste, gender, economic, educa­tional and political factors respon­sible for the conti­nu­ance of this (much too often banned) inhuman practice.
