»Der Film erzählt aus der Perspek­tive der 110jährigen Mima die Geschichte des Archipels Cabo Verde und ihrer Heimat, der Insel Fogo („Feuer“). Etwa alle dreißig Jahre wird Fogo von einer Eruption des Ursprungs­vul­kans Pico de Fogo heim­ge­sucht, zuletzt 1995. Obwohl ein Großteil der Häuser und Felder ihres Dorfs Cha das Caldeiras dadurch zerstört wurde, nimmt Mima es gelassen. Für sie ist der Vulkan nur EINE der Kata­stro­phen des kapver­di­schen Alltags. Auch mona­te­lang ausblei­bender Regen, Dürre und Hungersnot, erschweren das Leben. Die Bewohner Cha das Caldeiras’ am Fuße des Vulkans sollen nach den Plänen der deutschen Entwick­lungs­hilfe zwanzig Kilometer weiter weg in ein neu errich­tetes Dorf umge­sie­delt werden. Doch im Dorf regt sich Wider­stand. Können doch nicht einmal die Dorfäl­testen den nächsten Ausbruch des Pico de Fogo vorher­sehen. Und ohne akute Lebens­be­dro­hung will keiner die frucht­bare Erde, die über hundert Jahre lang ihre Heimat war, verlassen.

The film tells the story of the archi­pelago Cabo Verde and the Isle of Fogo („fire“)out of the view of 110 years old woman native Mima. Appro­xi­mately every 30 years the Isle of Fogo is hit by an eruption of the vulcano Pico de Fogo, the last eruption occured in 1995. Although the village Cha das Caldeiras’ most houses and fields were destroyed again, Mima keeps cool. For her the volcano is only one of the cata­strophs of every-day life in Cabo Verde: Months without rain, draught and famines make life hard and almost unbe­arable. According to plans of German Orga­niza­tion for Deve­lop­ment the village Cha das Caldeiros is supposed to move to a newly constructed area 20 kilometre from Pico de Fogo. But, since even very old residents are not able to preview the next eruption, nobody wants to leave the fertile soil of their ancestors without any reason and actual threat.
