»Warum waren wir so brav und schauten passiv zu? Dies ist eine der Fragen, mit denen uns Hasan Nuhanoviæ am Ende von A Cry from the Grave konfron­tiert. A Cry from the Grave ist ein Versuch, die Massaker vom Juli 1995 an den mehr als 7000 Moslems in Srebre­nica zu rekon­stru­ieren. Auf der Basis von Archiv­auf­nahmen, Bild­ma­te­rial von Nach­rich­ten­sen­dungen, münd­li­chen Über­lie­fe­rungen und bisher noch unbe­kanntem Film­ma­te­rial sucht der Doku­men­tar­film Antworten auf diese und weitere Fragen zu finden, wie z.B.: Wie konnten wir erlauben, dass am Ende des 20. Jahr­hun­derts ein derar­tiger Genozid unter den Augen der Vereinten Nationen statt­finden konnte? A Cry from the Grave doku­men­tiert sehr eindrucks­voll die Verzweif­lung der mosle­mi­schen Bevöl­ke­rung und die Gefühle von Unsi­cher­heit und Schuld der hollän­di­schen UN-Soldaten.

Why were we so docile and why did we stand by passively? It is one of the confron­ta­tional questions Hasan Nuhanoviæ poses at the end of A Cry from the Grave, a recon­struc­tion of the massacre of more than 7000 Muslims in Srebre­nica in July 1995. On the basis of archive footage, news footage, spoken memories and until recently unknown film footage, the film tries to find an answer to this and other questions, like: how could we allow such a horrific genocide to take place under the eyes of the United Nations at the end of the 20th century? A Cry from the Grave has a compact structure; using oral testi­mo­nies, it creates an image of the despe­ra­tion of the Muslim popu­la­tion and the feelings of uncer­tainty and guilt of the Dutch UN soldiers.

Seit den 60er-Jahren frei­schaf­fender Filme­ma­cher, TV-Produzent und Regisseur. Seit den 70er-Jahren schwer­punkt­mäßige Ausein­an­der­set­zung mit osteu­ropäi­scher Geschichte. 1974-1991 Filme zu den Mursi, einer Ethnie im Südwesten von Äthiopien, über die er auch in dem Buch A Box Full of Spirits schrieb. Er arbeitet vor allem für Granada TV in Manchester.
