Un crime à Abidjan

»Afrika befindet sich an einem anderen Moment in der Geschichte als der Rest der Welt,« erklärt der Poli­zei­chef von Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire. »Wir respek­tieren die Menschen­rechte, aber wir haben unsere eigenen Ansichten darüber, was mensch­lich ist«, ist seine Antwort auf die Frage nach Folte­rungen. Kommissar Kouassi hatte Mosco Boucault erlaubt, von Anfang bis Ende die poli­zei­li­chen Ermitt­lungen im Mordfall an dem Poli­zei­be­amten Toussaint Zoghouri zu filmen. Nach und nach stellen sich Kouassis Worte als Warnung und nicht als Entschul­di­gung heraus; nach west­li­chen Standards sind die Ermitt­lungs­me­thoden, die seine Polizei anwendet, auf jeden Fall brutal, grausam und gegen die Menschen­rechte. Der Film bietet einen scharfen Blick auf die Vorge­hens­weisen der Polizei der Côte d’Ivoire, wo Krimi­na­lität auf der Straße genauso üblich ist wie Repres­sion des Staats­ap­pa­rats auf das Volk.

»Africa stands at another moment in history than the rest of the world«, the Chief of Police of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire states in the beginning of the film. »We respect human rights, but we have our own opinions about what is humane«, is his response to the question whether he has commited atro­ci­ties and torture. This commis­sioner Kouassi gave director Mosco Boucault and his team permis­sion to film, from beginning to end, the police inquiry into the assas­si­na­tion of officer Toussaint Zoghouri, who was allegedly murdered by machete-carrying gangsters on 4 February 1995. By degrees, it becomes clear that Kouassi’s obser­va­tion should be considered a warning instead of an excuse; to Western standards, the inves­ti­ga­tion methods used by his police force could certainly be called brutal, cruel and unor­thodox. The film offers a unique glance at the doings of the police force of Côte d’Ivoire, where street violence is reflected by a regime that is at least as repres­sive.
