»CINÉMA VÉRITÉ – DEFINING THE MOMENT ist ein Doku­men­tar­film zum Thema Doku­men­tar­film, eine bedeu­tende Retro­spek­tive der besten non-Fiction-Filme des Jahr­hun­derts. Er feiert das Erbe der cinéma-vérité-Revo­lu­tion gegen Ende der 50er und in den 60er Jahren. Die Revo­lu­tion lief unter verschie­denen Namen: Free Cinema, Direct Cinema, Candid Eye, cinéma vérité. Sie brach gleich­zeitig in England, Frank­reich, den USA und Kanada aus. Überall bestand ihre Form aus einer neuen Methode, den Film, das Publikum und die Welt zu verstehen. CINÉMA VÉRITÉ ist Wander­schau und Geschichte, Feier­stunde und Wegweiser für die Zukunft. Der Film führt durch Nord­ame­rika und Europa auf der Suche nach den Großen, die unseren Blick für die Welt, aber auch die Welt, die wir erblicken, geändert haben. Wir folgen Peter Wintonick und seinem Team auf ihrer eigenen Suche nach der Wahrheit der Vérité-Revo­lu­tion.
Diese Stil­rich­tung wurde von einer Gruppe begeis­terter, unbe­irr­barer Rebellen geschaffen. Der Film stellt alle Haupt­fi­guren vor. Mit ihren leichten Hand­ka­meras und tragbaren Tongeräten, mit ihrem unfehl­baren Bekenntnis, die Wahrheit so aufzu­zeichnen, wie sie empfunden wurde, revo­lu­tio­nierten sie nicht nur den Doku­men­tar­film, sondern alle Formen der Filmkunst.

A feature docu­men­tary about docu­men­tary, CINÉMA VÉRITÉ – DEFINING THE MOMENT is a major retro­s­pec­tive of some of the century’s finest non-fiction films, and a cele­bra­tion of the contem­porary legacy of the cinéma vérité revo­lu­tion of the late fifties and early sixties. The revo­lu­tion had many names: Free Cinema, Direct Cinema, Candid Eye, Cinéma Vérité. And it broke out simul­ta­neously in England, France, the USA and Canada. Wherever it appeared, the form marked a comple­tely new way of under­s­tändig film, the audience, and the world.
Part road movie, part history, part cele­bra­tion, part nod to the future, the film travels acrpss North America and Europe in search of the greats who changed the way we see the world – and chaged the world we see. We follow director Peter Wintonick and his crew on their own quest for truth: the truth of what really happened during the vérité revo­lu­tion. The world of cinéma vérité filmma­king was created by a group of driven, dedicated rebels. All the key players are featured in this film. Their use of light­weight, hand-held cameras and portable sound equipment, along with their unfailing commit­ment to recording reality as they saw it, revo­lu­tio­nised not only the docu­men­tary, but all forms of movie-making.

Peter Wintonick

Seit mehr als zwanzig Jahren in fast allen Bereichen des Film­we­sens tätig: als Produzent, Regisseur, Autor und Cutter für Spiel-, Doku­mentar- und Lehrfilme, Fern­seh­pro­gramme und Internet-Websites, ausfüh­render Produzent und Berater für unab­hän­gige Film­pro­duk­tionen. Er schreibt über Film und unter­richtet Film­ge­schichte. 1994 Gründung des ›Virtual Film Festival‹, einer globalen Website für den unab­hän­gigen Film. Gemeinsam mit Francis Miquet betreibt er ›Necessary Illusions Produc­tions Inc.‹, eine Firma, die Medien über soziale und kultu­relle Themen entwi­ckelt, produ­ziert und verleiht.
