Before My Eyes

Mani Kauls Before My Eyes ist eine Film­studie über das Kaschmirtal ohne Kommentar oder Dialog und »ohne die natür­li­chen Dimen­sionen des Tals auf einen erkenn­baren Frei­zeit­wert zu redu­zieren.« Der neue Tourist ist für den Film der alte Reisende durch die Natur. Ange­fangen von einem weißen Strom erforscht der Film eine Wolke, einen See, einen Felsblock, eine Brücke, einen Fluß (erst vom Hubschrauber aus, dann vom Boden), das Wasser. Auf ein Gebirgs­massiv, in Wolken gehüllt, folgt ein Heiß­luft­ballon, der über die abge­ern­teten Felder, vom Herbst vergoldet, schwebt. Zu einer früh­lings­grünen Lichtung. Der Mond des Nachts am grauen Horizont. Und von hier erscheinen die Umrisse von Shajahan, auf dem Hausboot spielt ein Cellist den Raag Shri. Von einem Wasser­fall, umschlossen von Felsen, erhebt sich der Blick auf die schnee­be­deckten Berg­gipfel. Verweilt auf dem Gangabal See, wo die Sonne leuchtend erscheint, Wider­schein in den stillen blau-schwarzen Wassern.

Mani Kaul’s Before my Eyes is a film study of the Kashmir Valley without any commen­tary or dialogue, made »without reducing the natural dimen­sions of the valley to iden­ti­fiable holiday commo­di­ties«. »The new tourist for the film is the old nature-traveller. Beginning with a white stream, the film studies a cloud, a lake, a boulder, a bridge, a river (from the heli­c­opter first, then from ground), the water. A mountain shrouded in clouds is followed by a hot air balloon that floats across the harvested fields, autumnal gold. To the spring green glade. The night with the moon dropping on the grey horizon. And from here the Shajahan struc­tures appear, the houseboat has the cello player playing the Raag Shri. From a waterfall enclosed by rocks, the film elevates upon the snow-covered mountains. In chances upon the Gangabal Lake, where the sun is seen in a burning, but refracted moment in the still blue-black waters.«

BIO-FILMOGRAPHIE Mani Kaul

Geboren 1942 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Nach Abschluß des Rajasthan College in Jaipur 1963 Studium am Film & TV Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. Diplom als Regisseur und Dreh­buch­autor. 1966-69 verschie­dene Kurzfilme. Seit 1970 Regie­do­zent am FTII. Erhielt 1974 das »Pandit-Nehru-Stipen­dium«. Teilnahme an vielen inter­na­tio­nalen Festivals und zahl­reiche Auszeich­nungen.
