Romathan – Ein Platz für Menschen

Romathan ist ein Doku­men­tar­film über das gleich­na­mige Roma­theater in Kosice/Slowakei, das ausschließ­lich von Roma orga­ni­siert und bespielt wird und das in seiner Art einzig­artig in Europa ist.
Nach über 40 Jahren des Schwei­gens, der gesell­schaft­li­chen und künst­le­ri­schen Ausgren­zung der Roma ist das Romathan ein erster vorsich­tiger Schritt, sich einen »Raum der Norma­lität« in einer ansonsten ableh­nenden Umwelt zu erstreiten. Das Ensemble hat uns Einblick in seinen Thea­ter­alltag gewährt, die Mitglieder begegnen uns als künst­le­risch-kreative Menschen, die lernen, ihre Würde und ihr Selbst­ver­trauen zurück­zu­ge­winnen.
Sie verwei­gern das Klischee (Opfer­rolle) der Gadsche; ihnen war es während der Dreh­ar­beiten wichtiger, über ihre Arbeit, ihre künst­le­ri­sche Zukunft etc. zu sprechen, als über die mise­ra­blen Lebens­um­s­tände ihrer Menschen zwischen Ghetto und Müllkippe.
Der Film folgt diesem Selbst­ver­s­tändnis und erzählt über einen Zeitraum von vier Monaten aus dem Alltags­leben dieses kleinen Theaters.

Romathan is a docu­men­tary film about a Roma theatre in Kosice/Slovakia, which is managed and performed by Rom only and which is the only theatre of its kind in Europe.
Covering a period of 4 month the film describes the everyday life of the theatre in a post­com­mu­nist country at the edge of Europe: the work of the dancer, musicians and actors; rehear­sals and premiere of a new play by the Indian Nobel­prize author R. Tagore – The Ship-wrecked – chosen to emphasize the Indian roots of Roma culture; a group of young actors rehear­sing a play of their own – Adam & Eve – to express their feelings about the hostile atmo­s­phere of the »Gadjo« popu­la­tion around them; inter­views with the actors about personal expe­ri­ence living as a Rom in Slovakia; the daily efforts to keep the theatre alive like perfor­mances of Roma fairy­tales for children or touring Slovakia.
Without any commen­tary the film just follows the different events, listens to people and their personal expe­ri­ence about ethnic discri­mi­na­tion, about the theatre and how their work could improve the miserable situation of their people in Slovakia.
In this sense the film is an emotio­nally touching and visually expres­sive document about a little known aspect of Romani culture in Europe.

Monika Hielscher
Geboren 1952. 1969-73 Studium Kunst und Visuelle Kommu­ni­ka­tion, 1973-77 Studium Kunster­zie­hung, Sozio­logie, Philo­so­phie, 1977-81 Arbeit als Dozentin für Video und Film­ge­stal­tung in Frankfurt/Main und Hamburg. Seit 1979 unab­hän­gige Filme­ma­cherin. Mitglied des Hamburger Filmbüros seit 1980.

Matthias Heeder
Geboren 1951. 1971-76 Studium Germa­nistik, Geschichte, Philo­so­phie, Politik. 1977-78 Reisen in USA, Kanada, Südost­asien, Nord­afrika. 1978-81 Autor und Projekt­ent­wickler bei Mahufilm Hamburg. Lebt seit 1979 als unab­hän­giger Filme­ma­cher in Hamburg, Mitglied des Hamburger Filmbüros. Seit 1979 zahl­reiche Doku­men­ta­tionen für verschie­dene Fern­seh­an­stalten.
