O cineasta da selva – The Filmmaker of the Amazon

O cineasta da selva ist ein semi­do­ku­men­ta­ri­scher Film aus Fakten und einer imagi­nierten und danach insze­nierten Realität. Es ist die Geschichte von Silvino Santos (1886-1970) – eines brasi­lia­ni­schen Filme­ma­chers der, als das Jahr­hun­dert noch jung war, die ersten Bilder vom Amazonas auf die Leinwand brachte. Silvino Santo war in Portugal geboren und über­querte mit 13 Jahren den Atlantik auf der Suche nach dem phan­tas­ti­schen Amazonas, der Europas Phantasie beflü­gelte.
1913, auf der Höhe des Gummi-Booms am Amazonas machte Silvino Santos den ersten von neun Doku­men­tar­filmen, allesamt Chroniken der außer­or­dent­li­chen Ereig­nisse einer einzig­ar­tigen Zeit in der brasi­lia­ni­schen Geschichte Dieses bahn­bre­chende Film­ma­te­rial von Luft­auf­nahmen des Amazonas und von Filmen, die das Alltags­leben von bis dahin unbe­kannten india­ni­schen Stämmen beschrieb, wurde von Hundert­tau­senden von Brasi­lia­nern etwa im fernen Rio de Janeiro oder in São Paulo auf der Leinwand bewundert.
Zu seinen Lebzeiten galt Silvino Santos als Pionier des brasi­lia­ni­schen Kinos und als ein Mythos im Dschungel.

The Filmmaker of the Amazon is a docu­men­tary in which facts are mixed in with imagined reality, created and acted out. It tells the story of Silvino Santos (1886-1970) – a Brasilian filmmaker who brought the first images of the Amazon to the screen at the dawn of this century. Silvino Santos was born in Portugal and at the age of 13 crossed the Atlantic in search of the „fantastic“ Amazon which had fired the European imagi­na­tion. In 1913, at the height of the Amazonian rubber boom, Silvino Santos made the first of nine feature docu­men­tary films which cronicled the extra­or­di­nary events of a unique time and place in Brasilian history. This ground breaking footage of aerial shots of the Amazon, and films depicting the daily lives of hitherto unknown Indian tribes were seen by hundreds of thousands of Brasi­lians as far away as in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. During his lifetime Silvino Santos was reco­gnized as a pioneer of Brasilian cinema and achieved mythic status in the jungle.
