The Rumba ist not a particular dance. The „rumba is a whole complex dance created by the Cuban people.“
This documentary short film shows the origin, development and being in forme of this artistic manifestation that constitute one of the most powerful roots of the Cuban culture.
The Rumba since the beginning was marked with all the weigt of social prejudice. The very word „rumba“ comes from the name that was given in Spain to those women of „merry life“ or women of „rumbo“ (road).
All the parties that emerged from the people, it began to name them „rumbas“. The film explains with plenty information the origin of such prejudice and how it has been maintained up to date. Also it shows persons of the 3 main varyings of the „rumba“: the Guaguancó“, the „Columbia“, and the „Yambú“, and how this musical complex dance, has had a decisive influence in the rest of the popular Cuban music and also in that known as cult music.
This film recovers the meaning that has and still has the „rumba“ for the Cuban culture. If some time ago it was said in a pejorative sense that Cuba was a country of „rumberos“ (those who dance „rumba“) today it can be said with whole pride that Cuba, among other things is also a country of „rumberos“.
