"Bilder lesend, Worten lauschend führt ein Leser durch die kurze Erzählung "Gespräch im Gebirg", die Paul Celan 1959 nach einem Besuch im Engadin niedergeschreiben hat.
Ein Jude wandert einsam durchs Gebirge. Es ist Nacht und er ist in ein rätselhaftes Gespräch mit einem anderen Juden vertieft. Oder führt er Selbstgespräche?
Der Film dokumentiert eine außergewöhnliche Lektüre in einer Mischung von dokumentarischem und fiktionalem Material. In der Auseinandersetzung mit der schwierigen, aber auch humorvollen Erzählung Celans steht die Perspektive des Lesers im Mittelpunkt. Der hat sich in seiner Wohnung eingeschlossen und liest die Erzählung laut vor. Seine Rezitation begleitet er mit einer Vielzahl von seltsamen Handlungen: Er kommentiert, illustriert, inszeniert und experimentiert. Er breitet eine umfangreiche Sammlung von Bildern, Dokumenten und Videoaufnahmen aus, die er auf zahlreichen Reisen und in Archiven über Paul Celan und seine Erzählung gesammelt hat.
"Gespräch im Gebirg" ist eine ungewöhnliche Dokumentation und gleichzeitig eine Auseinandersetzung zum problematischen Verhältnis Literatur und Film.
Reading images, listening to words, a reader navigates through the short story "Conversation in the Mountains" which Paul Celan composed in 1959 after a trip to the Engadine.
A lone Jew walks through the mountains. It is night and he is engrossed in a cryptic conversation with another Jew. Or is he talking to himself?
The film documents an unusual recitation of the text using a mix of documentary and fictional material. In examining Celan's difficult but at times also humorous story, the perspective of the reader stands in the foreground. He has shut himself off in his apartment and proceeds to read the story out loud. He accompanies his recitation with a multitude of unusual actions: making commentary, drawing illustrations, staging of scenes, conducting experiments. He interweaves an extensive collection of pictures, documents and video segments he has compiled about Paul Celan and his story during his numerous travels and in archives.
"Conversation in the Mountains" is an unusual documentation and - at the same time - a controversy on the problematic relation between literature and film.
